Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

There’s spring cleaning. We’re making the case for a fall reset.
Because right now, advertisers are sitting in that very brief calm before the Q4 storm. Holiday campaigns are planned, budgets are getting real, and the busiest stretch of the year is close enough to see coming, but there’s still time to catch the things that could trip you up once everything starts moving faster.
Think of it as giving your campaign setup one last once-over before holiday traffic hits. Not a full overhaul. Just a chance to tighten what needs tightening, refresh what has gone stale, and make sure the pieces behind the scenes are ready for what’s coming.
Here are five places to start.
1. Make Sure Your Measurement Can Handle Q4
Holiday campaigns tend to expose measurement problems quickly. More spend, more channels, more promotions, and more scrutiny mean gaps that were easy to ignore in August can become much harder to explain in November.
And measurement is already under pressure. IAB’s 2026 State of Data report points to signal loss, privacy changes, platform fragmentation, and disconnected data environments as major barriers to understanding what is actually driving results.
So this is a good time to make sure everyone is working from the same definitions, that conversion events are firing properly, and that reporting can actually connect media activity to business outcomes.
Fall reset checklist:
- Confirm conversion events and pixels are firing correctly.
- Review attribution windows and reporting definitions.
- Check UTMs, CRM connections, and offline conversion tracking.
- Make sure teams agree on which KPIs actually matter.
2. Shop Your Own Customer Journey
One of the easiest ways to find problems before customers do: become one.
Search for your brand. Click the ad. Visit the landing page. Try it on mobile. Check the reviews. Add something to cart. See how checkout feels.
That exercise matters because people increasingly research holiday purchases before they happen. Google found that 83% of early-October holiday purchases in 2025 were researched beforehand, up from 77% the year before.
The journey is also getting more complicated. Google’s 2026 holiday research found that shoppers using AI during the purchase process interact with or notice an average of 12.1 touchpoints, compared with 4.2 among shoppers who do not use AI.
The ad may start the journey. It rarely gets to finish it alone.
Fall reset checklist:
- Test your full path to purchase on desktop and mobile.
- Check landing pages, pricing, promos, and inventory.
- Look for friction between the ad message and the page experience.
- Make sure key information is easy to find before checkout.
3. Retire the Creative That Has Overstayed Its Welcome
That campaign asset that has been doing its job since June? It may be time to thank it for its service.
Before holiday campaigns ramp up, review what has been running longest, where performance is starting to soften, and whether the creative still fits the environment it is appearing in.
This is not just about swapping in red and green and calling it a refresh. Shoppers move between search, social, streaming, commerce media, websites, and stores throughout the season. Creative should work differently depending on where someone sees it and what they need in that moment.
The goal is not more creative for the sake of more creative. It is giving campaigns enough variation to stay relevant throughout a long, crowded season.
Fall reset checklist:
- Identify assets that have been running the longest.
- Flag declining engagement or performance.
- Build fresh variations before fatigue shows up.
- Adapt messaging and formats by channel.
4. Clean Up the Data Behind Your Campaigns
Platforms can optimize quickly. They can also optimize very efficiently around bad inputs.
That makes pre-Q4 data hygiene worth the effort.
Review audience lists, suppression files, CRM matches, product feeds, pricing, and inventory information. This matters even more as AI becomes part of discovery and shopping behavior, because richer and more accurate product data helps platforms surface relevant options in conversational and visual searches. Google specifically recommends detailed product information and high-quality imagery to improve discoverability in AI-supported shopping journeys.
Fragmented and inconsistent data across platforms and systems limits advertisers’ ability to measure, compare, and optimize performance.
Fall reset checklist:
- Refresh first-party audience lists.
- Update suppression and exclusion files.
- Check CRM match quality.
- Review product feeds, pricing, and inventory data.
- Remove stale or duplicate inputs.
5. Pressure-Test Your Holiday Plan
Every Q4 plan looks great until Q4 actually happens.
Costs move. Inventory changes. One audience suddenly outperforms another. A promotion takes off. A creative concept does not. Consumers start shopping earlier, later, or simply differently than expected.
Holiday shopping also stretches well beyond one major weekend. Google’s holiday research shows consumers are buying from October through January, which means campaigns need enough flexibility to respond as behavior changes across the season.
So instead of only asking whether the plan is ready, ask whether the plan is ready to change.
Fall reset checklist:
- Define when budget should shift between channels.
- Decide what performance thresholds trigger action.
- Prepare backup creative and offers.
- Identify where incremental budget can go if something takes off.
- Make sure decision-makers are clear before the rush begins.
Consider This Your Pre-Q4 Check-In
Q4 does not need another layer of complexity.
The point of a fall reset is to catch the things that are easy to fix now and much more annoying to fix later. A cleaner setup, fresher creative, better data, and a little more flexibility can go a long way once the holiday rush begins.
Because the season will bring enough surprises on its own.
